Whispers of the Fjords is a landscape documentary that takes viewers on a journey through the raw and untouched beauty of Iceland’s Westfjords. Created by filmmakers Jakob Karrasch and Hannah Lindinger, the film is born out of their shared fascination with nature—Jakob’s deep personal connection to the region after several visits, and Hannah’s passion for storytelling and environmental awareness. Their collaboration brings together visual precision and narrative depth, resulting in a contemplative film experience.
The documentary was produced in close cooperation with Visit Westfjords (www.visitwestfjords.is), whose support and local expertise were instrumental in realizing the project. Thanks to their help, valuable contacts and authentic filming locations were made accessible, and the storyline could be developed in close dialogue with people who live and work in the region. The collaboration also emphasized the importance of sustainable tourism and regional identity, themes that are subtly interwoven throughout the film.
Three key interviews provide insight into life in the Westfjords: Helen Cova, a writer from Venezuela who found a new home in Flateyri; Finnur Olafsson, mayor of Hólmavík and local entrepreneur; and Sölvi Guðmundsson from Visit Westfjords, who reflects on regional development. Their voices offer personal perspectives on the connection between people, nature, and community in one of Iceland’s most remote areas.
Filmed with great flexibility and spontaneity, Whispers of the Fjords responds to the rhythm of nature itself—allowing space for the unexpected, such as dramatic weather shifts, moments of silence, wildlife encounters, and the magic of the Northern Lights. Rather than following a strict script, the film unfolds organically, inviting viewers to slow down and simply observe.
At its core, Whispers of the Fjords is a visual tribute to a wild and delicate region, a call to protect what remains untouched, and a heartfelt thank-you to the people and landscapes that made this film possible.
